December 2007

In addition to working on the photo mosaic, Kuenga and I somehow found time to join the Photography Club outing this past Sunday afternoon. Ian (the head honcho) suggested that we take the themes that members have listed for the photo exhibition next year (I haven’t picked a theme yet) and use them for the photo club outings. I thought it was a brilliant idea; we didn’t have to knock our heads for themes to shoot and at the same time, our individual interpretations of the theme can provide inspiration/ideas for the one who chose the theme. We met at 3pm and after a short discussion, we were left to wander and shoot on the theme chosen for the day “Architecture”.

I enjoyed the opportunity to photowalk again. Even for just an hour or so. I should do this more often, may be during the long weekend coming up (next Monday is the Bhutan National Day, a public holiday). After a few hectic nights of working on the photomosaic, it was a lovely break to just walk and shoot, even if it got chilly after a while (reminder to self: wear warmer clothes).

Ian bought us coffee and cookies at Art Cafe after the walk (Thanks Ian!). The club will meet again on the 19th where we’ll have to share 3 of our photos and hopefully have a good discussion on our work.

Three Mad Women

The weekend went by in a flurry. I offered to help Kuenga and Yannick (a wonderful Belgium who has been here in Bhutan for 7 years) with their photo mosaic project for the upcoming VAST exhibition on the December 17. I became more involved than I originally expected but I had a wonderful time with the ladies. Much laughter and food always makes for a roaring good time.

The Final Piece!

Yannick was the main photographer for the thousands of Bhutanese portraits that make up the mosaic. Kuenga was responsible for the generation of the mosaic design, and I was simply the provider of manual labour, to cut and glue the 3cm by 2cm photos.

Closeup

Despite the late nights, the final mosaic looked really good. So if anyone is in Thimphu on December 17 (Monday), please drop by the VAST studio for the exhibition. If you see three beaming faces next to the photo mosaic, that would be us!

Masterpiece

Today is International Volunteer Day. I wouldn’t be much of a volunteer if I didn’t give it a mention here on the blog, would I? We had a celebration here in Thimphu on 2nd December (Sunday), organised by Volunteers in Bhutan (VIB, try the Google cache version since the site appears to be borked). The occasion was graced by Her Royal Highness Ashi Sonam Dechan Wangchuk and was a lovely affair. It was great to meet other volunteers and staff from other volunteer organisations in Bhutan.
